Earlier this week I was watching a Joe Rogan podcast with guest John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods Market. In addition to building one of the most successful chain of grocery stores, Mackey is also a recognized author and co-wrote the bestselling book Conscious Capitalism, released in 2013.
During the interview, Mackey made an interesting comment about an individual’s ideas and beliefs. According to Mackey, “Ideas are like clothes, they’re not who I am, just what I’m wearing today.” Mackey went on to explain, “The clothes are not me, and the ideas and beliefs are not me either. When they don’t fit any longer, set them aside.”
What a profound and liberating concept. We have the ability and freedom to rewrite our beliefs and ideas to reshape the course of our life. This understanding allows us to detach or separate from our beliefs without shame as we continue to explore, learn and grow during our life journey.
There’s no need to feel guilty for beliefs that may have been previously instilled upon us during our formative years. In the prologue to his bestselling book The Biology of Beliefs, biologist and author Bruce Lipton, PhD states, “It’s my sincerest hope that everyone who reads The Biology of Beliefs recognizes that many of the beliefs that propel their lives are false and self-limiting.”
Just as a computer has an operating system that’s always quietly analyzing and processing data behind the scene, the subconscious mind is constantly observing and making decisions based on prior experiences. Decisions that may no longer align with the thoughts and dreams of the current conscious mind.
According to Lipton, “The learned behaviors and beliefs acquired from other people, such as parents, peers, and teachers, may not support the goals or desires of our conscious mind. The biggest impediments to realizing the success of which we dream are the limitations programmed into the subconscious. These limitations not only influence our behaviors, they can also play a major role in determining our physiology and health.”
Understanding our core beliefs, and being willing to do the work necessary to change or modify our beliefs at the subconscious level, are the first steps toward self-sovereignty. To Build a Better You one must first understand the Answer is Within You.
What will you do to take control, accept personal accountability, and to Own Your Destiny?
May your life journey be full of love, personal freedom and Self-Sovereignty!
